The Hard Truth: 20 Parenting Mistakes That Undermine Children's Confidence, Character and Resilience (Part 3)
By Sifu Pablo Cardenas, a direct disciple in the Ip Man – GM William Cheung lineage (friend & mentor of Bruce Lee) and Krav Maga instructor
15. Being a Friend Instead of Being a Parent
Every child wants to be loved.
But children also need leadership.
Parents who constantly seek their child's approval often avoid setting boundaries, enforcing consequences or saying "no." While this may reduce conflict in the short term, it can create uncertainty in the long term.
Children feel secure when adults lead with consistency.
Good parenting isn't about winning a popularity contest.
It's about making decisions that prepare children for adulthood—even when those decisions are unpopular.
Strong parents understand that respect and love are not opposites. In fact, clear boundaries often strengthen both.
At United Martial Arts & Fitness, instructors are approachable, encouraging and supportive, but they are not there to entertain or negotiate standards. Children quickly learn that expectations are consistent and fair. That consistency builds trust.
16. Avoiding Discipline Because It Feels Uncomfortable
Discipline is often misunderstood.
It is not about punishment for punishment's sake.
True discipline teaches.
It provides structure.
It establishes expectations.
It creates accountability.
Children who experience fair, consistent discipline learn that choices have consequences and that they are capable of making better decisions next time.
Without discipline, behaviour becomes driven by impulse.
With discipline, behaviour becomes guided by values.
At UMF, discipline is never about humiliation. It is about learning. Students are corrected respectfully, encouraged to improve and recognised when they demonstrate growth.
Children soon discover that discipline is not something done to them—it is something they develop within themselves.
17. Lowering Standards Instead of Raising Capability
Sometimes parents reduce expectations because they don't want their child to struggle.
Homework becomes optional.
Responsibilities disappear.
Rules become flexible.
Excuses replace effort.
While well intentioned, lowering standards often lowers confidence.
Children gain confidence when they achieve something they once thought was difficult.
Progress requires standards.
At UMF, every student is challenged according to their age and ability. Standards remain consistent, but coaching is individual. We don't expect perfection—we expect effort, persistence and improvement.
Children often surprise themselves when adults believe they are capable of more.
18. Ignoring Physical Health and Fitness
A child's physical development is closely connected to emotional wellbeing, confidence and learning.
Regular movement improves coordination, concentration, emotional regulation and overall health.
Unfortunately, many children spend increasing amounts of time sitting, scrolling and gaming.
Physical activity becomes something that happens occasionally rather than forming part of everyday life.
Martial arts offers something unique.
Children don't exercise because someone tells them to.
They exercise because training has purpose.
They learn practical skills.
They work towards meaningful goals.
They enjoy belonging to a team while developing individual responsibility.
Fitness becomes a by-product of learning rather than a chore.
19. Failing to Model the Behaviour You Expect
Children are exceptional observers.
Long before they follow advice, they watch behaviour.
Parents who ask children to be respectful while speaking disrespectfully send conflicting messages.
Parents who expect discipline but avoid discipline themselves send conflicting messages.
Parents who value honesty only when it is convenient teach children that integrity is conditional.
The most powerful lessons children receive are often unspoken.
They come from what adults consistently model.
This is one reason martial arts instructors can have such a positive influence.
Students don't simply hear lessons about respect.
They see it demonstrated.
They witness instructors treating every student fairly.
They observe senior students helping beginners.
They experience a culture where behaviour aligns with expectations.
Character is taught through example.
20. Forgetting That Childhood Is Preparation for Adulthood
Perhaps the greatest parenting mistake is forgetting the purpose of childhood.
Childhood is not meant to be a permanent state of comfort.
It is preparation.
Preparation for employment.
Preparation for relationships.
Preparation for responsibility.
Preparation for contributing to society.
Every decision a parent makes should be viewed through one simple question:
"Will this help my child become a capable adult?"
Sometimes the answer involves encouragement.
Sometimes it involves correction.
Sometimes it involves allowing children to experience disappointment rather than removing it.
Capability—not comfort—should remain the destination.
Children who become capable are better equipped to navigate adversity, solve problems, build healthy relationships and contribute positively to their communities.
Why Martial Arts Remains One of the Most Powerful Environments for Child Development
Many extracurricular activities teach valuable skills.
Some improve fitness.
Some build teamwork.
Some develop creativity.
Few intentionally combine physical competence, emotional regulation, leadership, respect, accountability, resilience and decision-making into every lesson.
That is where martial arts stands apart.
Quality instruction is not about teaching children to fight.
It is about teaching them when not to fight.
It is about helping them remain calm under pressure, communicate respectfully, think clearly and develop the confidence that comes from genuine competence.
At United Martial Arts & Fitness, our philosophy extends well beyond techniques.
Our programs are structured around developmental stages because a four-year-old learns differently from a twelve-year-old, and a teenager learns differently again.
Children progress through clear expectations, consistent coaching and meaningful challenges that are appropriate for their age and ability.
Whether a family is searching for martial arts Townsville, kids martial arts Townsville, self defence Townsville, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Townsville or Muay Thai Townsville, they deserve more than an activity that simply fills an afternoon.
They deserve an environment that helps prepare children for life.
Our commitment to character development, pressure-tested self-defence and coaching excellence reflects that responsibility every day.
The Goal Is Not Perfect Parenting
No parent gets everything right.
Every family experiences difficult days.
Every child will test boundaries.
Every parent will make mistakes.
What matters is the willingness to learn, adapt and consistently move towards raising capable, responsible young people.
Children do not need perfect parents.
They need parents who are prepared to lead.
Who are willing to set standards.
Who understand that temporary discomfort often produces long-term growth.
Who value character above convenience.
When parents and coaches work together, remarkable things happen.
Children become more respectful.
More resilient.
More disciplined.
More confident.
Not because someone repeatedly told them they were exceptional, but because they earned the belief through effort, responsibility and perseverance.
Those qualities cannot be taken away by failure, criticism or adversity.
They become part of who the child is.
That is the true purpose of education.
That is the true purpose of coaching.
And that is one of the greatest gifts any adult can help provide.
Build Capability That Lasts a Lifetime
The strongest children are not those who never face challenges—they are the ones who learn how to overcome them.
At United Martial Arts & Fitness, every class is designed to develop more than physical skill. Through structured, age-appropriate coaching, children and adults learn discipline, resilience, respect and practical self-defence that extends far beyond the training floor.
