Build Your Child’s Confidence, Discipline & Resilience in Townsville
More Than Martial Arts — Building Skills for School, Home and Life
As parents, we want our children to grow into confident, respectful and resilient young people — capable of handling challenges, making good decisions and standing up for themselves when it matters.
But genuine confidence doesn't come from simply telling a child to “be confident.”
Discipline develops through expectations and consistency. Resilience develops when children face appropriate challenges, experience setbacks, receive guidance and discover they can improve.
At United Martial Arts & Fitness (UMF) in Townsville, we have worked with local families since 2005. Our kids programs combine structured, age-appropriate martial arts and practical self-defence training with a dedicated Character Development System.
Children learn physical skills, but that is only part of what we teach.
Our students are encouraged to develop confidence, discipline, focus, respect, responsibility, resilience and self-control — qualities that can support them at home, at school, in sport and throughout life.
Whether your child is naturally confident or quiet, struggles with focus, needs a positive challenge, is learning to deal with setbacks or needs better strategies for handling bullying and confrontation, UMF provides a structured environment where they can learn, practise and progress.
One Academy. Complete Martial Arts. Real Self-Defence. Lifelong Confidence.

Trusted by Townsville Families Since 2005
United Martial Arts & Fitness was established in Townsville in 2005 by founder and Principal Instructor Sifu Pablo Cardenas.
Today, UMF provides multiple martial arts pathways for children, teenagers and adults from its dedicated academy in Garbutt.
UMF combines experienced martial arts instruction with structured character development, practical self-defence, clear progression pathways and consistent expectations around discipline, respect and behaviour.
Our approach is straightforward:
We don't simply teach children martial arts techniques. We use martial arts as a vehicle to help develop more confident, disciplined, resilient and capable young people.
Why Townsville Parents Choose UMF
Not every child begins martial arts for the same reason.
One parent may want greater confidence. Another may be concerned about focus or discipline. Some children need physical activity and a positive challenge. Others want to learn practical self-defence or are struggling with how to respond to bullying or confrontation.
That is why UMF goes beyond simply teaching children to punch, kick or grapple.
Our kids programs combine:
-
Age-appropriate martial arts and practical self-defence
-
Structured Character Development
-
Clear expectations around discipline and respect
-
Goal setting and progressive achievement
-
Confidence developed through genuine accomplishment

-
Striking, grappling and traditional martial arts pathways
-
Leadership opportunities for suitable students
-
Strong parent–student–instructor involvement
-
Experienced instructors within a structured academy environment
Children are expected to listen, participate, practise, demonstrate respect and work toward improvement.
We also believe children achieve more when their instructors and parents reinforce compatible expectations.
UMF therefore encourages a partnership between the student, parent and Academy built around commitment, discipline, respect, responsibility and consistent effort.
Character Development Is Part of the Training — Not an Afterthought
Martial arts can teach valuable lessons, but at UMF we don't leave character development to chance.
Our structured Character Development System is integrated into our children's programs, reinforcing qualities including:
Respect • Discipline • Leadership • Confidence • Integrity • Self-Control • Responsibility • Resilience • Focus • Kindness
Students don't simply hear these words.
They are expected to demonstrate them through how they train, listen, respond to correction, treat their training partners, manage frustration and approach challenges.
Parents are part of this process.
UMF provides character focuses and activities that can be reinforced outside the Academy, helping connect what children are learning during martial arts with expectations at home and in everyday life.
This matters because character isn't developed during one conversation.
It develops through consistent expectations, repeated practice and accountability over time.
A Martial Arts Pathway That Can Grow With Your Child
One of UMF's strengths is that children are not restricted to one training pathway.
Different children enjoy different challenges. Their interests and abilities can also change as they grow.
UMF provides several age-appropriate options.
Little Dragons — Ages 4–7
Little Dragons introduces younger children to martial arts through structured, age-appropriate training while developing listening, coordination, confidence, focus and respect.
Children are introduced to basic self-defence concepts with an emphasis on appropriate non-striking solutions and responsible behaviour.
EXPLORE LITTLE DRAGONS
Young Warriors — Ages 8–14
Young Warriors develops practical martial arts and self-defence skills alongside discipline, confidence, resilience, responsibility and self-control.
Students face progressively greater technical and personal challenges as they mature.

The goal is to provide children with a pathway they can continue growing into rather than simply completing a short activity and moving on.
What Will Your Child Learn at UMF?
The exact physical skills depend on the program your child chooses, but UMF training extends beyond technique.
Physical & Self-Defence Development
Students can progressively develop:
-
Balance and coordination
-
Movement and body awareness
-
Striking and/or grappling fundamentals
-
Distance and positioning
-
Practical self-defence concepts

-
Awareness and decision-making
-
Fitness and physical confidence
-
Safe partner-training skills
-
Technical control
Just as importantly, children learn that having the ability to use a physical technique doesn't mean they should automatically use it.
For children, self-defence begins with awareness, communication, boundaries, avoiding unnecessary confrontation and seeking help from trusted adults.
Physical self-defence is not taught as the answer to every disagreement.
Character & Personal Development
Students are also challenged to develop:
Confidence • Discipline • Respect • Focus • Responsibility • Perseverance • Self-Control • Resilience • Leadership
These aren't simply words displayed around the Academy.
They are reinforced through training, behaviour expectations, challenges, gradings, interaction with instructors and training partners, and the responsibility students take for their own progress.
EXPLORE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
Is UMF Right for My Child?
Your child does not need to already be confident, athletic, coordinated or experienced to begin.
Learning is the reason they come.
UMF's children's programs cater for ages 4–14, with different options according to age and interests.
UMF may be a good fit if you want to help your child develop:
-
Greater confidence
-
Improved focus and listening
-
Discipline and accountability
-
Resilience when things become difficult

-
Physical activity and coordination
-
Positive interaction with others
-
Respect for themselves and other people
-
Practical self-defence knowledge
-
Goal setting and perseverance
-
Independence and responsibility
Children develop at different rates.
Our goal isn't to make every child identical or constantly compare them with the person standing beside them.
The important comparison is with where they started.
Experienced Leadership Behind Your Child’s Training
UMF is led by founder and Principal Instructor Sifu Pablo Cardenas, who brings more than 40 years of martial arts experience and more than two decades of teaching in Townsville.
His experience and qualifications include:
-
Level 10 Wing Chun Kung Fu Instructor
-

-
Level 1 Boxing Coach

More than 40 years of martial arts training and experience
-
More than 20 years teaching martial arts in Townsville
-

Pablo's approach is based on the belief that martial arts should develop more than physical ability.
Students should become more confident, disciplined and resilient while learning to make better decisions under pressure.
UMF instructors work within an Academy structure with clear expectations around safety, behaviour, technical standards and student progression.
For children, good coaching involves more than demonstrating techniques.
It means understanding when to encourage, when to challenge, when to correct and when a student needs time to develop.
Sifu Emilio Cardenas — Senior Instructor
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt | Level 10 Wing Chun Kung Fu | Judo | Muay Thai | Boxing/Kickboxing | Street Edge Krav Maga
Sifu Emilio Cardenas has progressed from a young UMF student to one of the Academy’s most experienced multi-discipline instructors.
A Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt and Level 10 Wing Chun Kung Fu practitioner, Emilio also has extensive experience across Judo, Muay Thai, Boxing/Kickboxing and practical self-defence. He continues to train and learn from respected Australian and international
martial artists and coaches, continually refining his knowledge as both a practitioner and instructor.
A major part of Emilio’s role is developing children and teenagers. His coaching goes beyond teaching techniques, reinforcing UMF’s standards of discipline, respect, commitment, accountability and self-control while helping students build genuine confidence through effort and achievement.
Emilio understands when to encourage, challenge and correct, helping students progress through UMF’s striking, grappling, self-defence, MMA and leadership pathways.
His goal is not simply to develop better martial artists, but to help develop more confident, disciplined, resilient and capable young people.

Benefits That Reach Beyond the Martial Arts Academy
Parents often first consider martial arts because they want their child to learn self-defence.
That is valuable — but the potential benefits extend much further.
Confidence
Children have opportunities to develop confidence through competence.
They learn something difficult, practise it, receive correction and eventually recognise their own improvement.
Discipline
Regular training reinforces the lesson that worthwhile achievements usually require consistency, effort and patience.
Resilience
Not every technique works the first time.
Children experience manageable challenges and learn that making a mistake doesn't mean they have failed.
Respect
Students are expected to respect instructors, training partners, Academy standards and themselves.
Self-Control
Martial arts ability comes with responsibility.
Knowing when not to use a physical skill is as important as knowing how to perform it.
Leadership
As students mature, suitable students can progress toward greater responsibility and leadership opportunities within UMF.
Bullying, Confidence & Self-Defence: What Children Really Need
One of the biggest misconceptions we encounter is the idea that teaching a child how to fight automatically solves bullying.
It doesn't.
Bullying can involve verbal behaviour, exclusion, intimidation, online behaviour, social pressure and physical confrontation.
Children therefore need more than punches and kicks.
They need strategies for:
-
Recognising inappropriate behaviour
-
Communicating confidently
-
Setting boundaries
-
Remaining composed
-
Avoiding unnecessary escalation
-
Knowing when to walk away
-
Seeking help from parents, teachers or other trusted adults
-
Protecting themselves appropriately if physical confrontation genuinely cannot be avoided
Martial arts should never give a child permission to intimidate somebody else.
At UMF, physical capability is taught alongside judgement, responsibility and self-control.
Our objective isn't to create children who look for confrontation.
We want young people who have the confidence, awareness and capability to make better decisions when confronted with difficult situations.
What More Than 20 Years of Teaching Children Has Shown Us
After more than two decades teaching martial arts in Townsville, one lesson continues to stand out:
Confidence cannot simply be handed to a child.
We regularly see children arrive at UMF who are hesitant to answer a question, reluctant to attempt something unfamiliar or worried about making a mistake in front of others.
We don't expect them to transform overnight.
Instead, we give them appropriate challenges, instruction, encouragement and opportunities to improve.
A child tries.
Sometimes they struggle.
They receive correction.
They practise.
They try again.
Eventually, something that once seemed difficult becomes something they can do.
That experience teaches a lesson far more powerful than simply being told they are good at something:
“I can improve.”
Over time, the child who once stood quietly at the back may be the student helping somebody newer, demonstrating a technique or even progressing toward a leadership role.
That is the type of confidence we want to develop.
Confidence backed by experience.
Real Experience Within the Townsville Community
UMF's teaching extends beyond our own Academy.
Our instructors have worked with Townsville schools, organisations and community groups to provide martial arts, self-defence and personal-development experiences.
Townsville Grammar School, for example, has engaged the UMF team to work with Year 9 and Year 12 students in self-defence training.
These experiences continually reinforce something we see inside the Academy:
Young people benefit most when physical skills are combined with sound decision-making, confidence, responsibility and self-control.
Martial arts should prepare students not simply for the next grading, but for situations they may encounter beyond the training floor.

What to Expect When Your Child Starts
It is completely normal for children to feel nervous before their first martial arts class.
They don't need previous experience.
They don't need to know the terminology.
And they aren't expected to get everything right.
For a trial, follow the clothing instructions provided with your booking, bring a water bottle and arrive with enough time for your child to become comfortable with the environment before training begins.
Our instructors will guide them through the appropriate class structure and fundamentals.
Progress starts with turning up, participating and being willing to learn.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can martial arts help my child become more confident?
Martial arts provides opportunities for children to develop confidence through learning and achievement. Instead of confidence being based solely on praise, students experience themselves learning skills that were initially unfamiliar or difficult. Consistent training, appropriate challenges and genuine progress can help build confidence in their own abilities.
Can martial arts help if my child is being bullied?
Martial arts can help children develop useful skills such as confidence, awareness, communication, boundaries, self-control and practical self-defence. However, there is no single solution to every bullying situation. Parents, schools and appropriate adults remain important. UMF teaches children that physical techniques are not the first response to ordinary conflict.
Does UMF teach children to fight bullies?
We teach children practical martial arts and self-defence, but physical confrontation isn't presented as the first answer to bullying.
Children need to understand awareness, communication, boundaries, avoidance, seeking assistance and responsible decision-making alongside physical self-defence.
Will martial arts make my child aggressive?
That is not the objective of structured martial arts training at UMF.
Students learn control, respect and responsibility alongside physical techniques. Having the capability to defend yourself does not give you permission to intimidate or unnecessarily hurt somebody else.
My child is shy. Will they fit in?
Children don't need to arrive confident or outgoing.
Some students naturally take longer to become comfortable in a new environment. Our instructors encourage participation while recognising that children develop at different rates.
What age can my child start martial arts at UMF?
Children can begin Little Dragons from age four.
UMF also provides BJJ & Judo and Boxing/Kickboxing pathways from age six, while Young Warriors is designed for ages 8–14.
The best program depends on your child's age, interests and goals.
Which martial art is best for building confidence?
There isn't one martial art automatically best for every child.
Confidence is influenced by quality instruction, the training environment, appropriate challenges, consistency and how strongly the child engages with the activity.
One advantage of UMF is that families can choose between traditional martial arts, striking, grappling or combined pathways rather than trying to fit every child into one discipline.
Does my child need previous martial arts experience?
No.
Beginners are welcome and students are taught progressively.
Your child isn't expected to arrive knowing martial arts — that's what we're here to teach.
Does my child need to be fit or athletic?
No.
Children arrive with different fitness levels, coordination, personalities and physical abilities. Training provides opportunities to progressively develop fitness, movement, coordination and martial arts skills.
How does UMF teach discipline?
Discipline isn't developed through a slogan.
Students are expected to listen, follow instructions, respect their training partners, practise skills, accept appropriate correction and continue working when something is difficult.
UMF's Character Development System reinforces these expectations beyond individual martial arts techniques.
What is the UMF Character Development System?
It is a structured system incorporated into UMF's children's programs to reinforce qualities including confidence, discipline, respect, responsibility, integrity, focus, self-control, resilience, kindness and leadership.
Parent involvement and activities outside class can also help reinforce the character focus being taught.
LEARN ABOUT UMF CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
What if my child wants both striking and grappling?
UMF provides a pathway combining Boxing/Kickboxing/Muay Thai 4 Kids with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Judo 4 Kids.
This creates an MMA pathway for children interested in developing both striking and grappling skills.
Can my child progress into leadership?
Yes, for suitable students.
UMF's Junior Leaders Program provides selected students aged 8–14 with opportunities to develop responsibility, communication, initiative and leadership.
Selection isn't based simply on martial arts ability. Character, consistency, attitude and behaviour matter.
Can my child try UMF before we commit?
Yes.
UMF offers trial options so your child can experience the Academy, meet our instructors and participate in training before your family decides on the next step.
Give Your Child Skills That Go Beyond Martial Arts

And the capability to protect themselves when genuinely necessary.
These are skills that matter far beyond the martial arts floor.
