UMF History & Legacy
The UMF Story
Over 20 Years of Martial Arts, Growth & Community in Townsville
United Martial Arts & Fitness (UMF) has been part of the Townsville martial arts community since 2005.
Originally established as North Queensland Wing Chun Kung Fu Academy, UMF began with approximately 30 students and a commitment to quality martial arts instruction, practical skills and personal development.
More than two decades later, UMF has grown into a multi-discipline martial arts academy providing training for children, teenagers and adults.
The photographs below are presented in chronological order, documenting the people, events, training, achievements and milestones that have shaped UMF from its early years through to today.
From Our Beginning to Today
As you move through the gallery, you are following the evolution of UMF.
The early photographs capture our beginnings as a dedicated Wing Chun academy and the foundations upon which UMF was built.
Wing Chun remains an important part of our history, with our lineage tracing through Grandmaster William Cheung to Grandmaster Ip Man.
Over the years, the photographs document the Academy's growth through gradings, seminars, demonstrations, competitions, instructor development and community events, along with the many students and families who became part of the UMF story.
2013 — A Significant Chapter in Our History
Among the important milestones documented in this gallery is Sifu Pablo Cardenas' 2013 journey to China's Henan Province as part of an international martial arts delegation led by Grandmaster William Cheung.
The experience provided an opportunity to visit locations significant to Chinese martial arts history and experience first-hand some of the traditions and culture behind the martial arts.
The Evolution of United Martial Arts & Fitness
As the years progressed, UMF evolved beyond its original Wing Chun foundations.
Training expanded to include Muay Thai and Boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Street Edge Krav Maga, providing students with access to striking, grappling, traditional martial arts and practical self-defence within one Academy.
Children's martial arts also became an increasingly important part of UMF.
Programs were developed not only to teach martial arts skills, but to help young people build confidence, discipline, resilience, focus, respect and personal responsibility.
The gallery also records UMF's growing involvement throughout Townsville through school programs, demonstrations, community events, workshops, expos, self-defence initiatives and Defence community activities.
More Than Photographs
These images represent more than martial arts classes.
They document gradings, competitions, seminars, demonstrations, achievements, friendships, leadership development and personal milestones across more than two decades.
For some students, achievement meant earning a new rank or competing. For others, it meant becoming more confident, learning to defend themselves, improving their fitness, overcoming challenges or developing the discipline to keep going when things became difficult.
Many students have also progressed from learners to leaders, helping the next generation through mentoring, leadership and instructor development.
2025 — 20 Years of UMF
In 2025, United Martial Arts & Fitness celebrated 20 years of martial arts instruction in Townsville.
From approximately 30 students in 2005 to the multi-discipline Academy UMF has become today, those 20 years represent thousands of classes and countless hours of teaching, training and student development.
The Academy has evolved considerably.
Our commitment to quality martial arts instruction, practical skills, strong standards and personal development has remained.
The UMF Story Continues
Today, United Martial Arts & Fitness continues to provide martial arts and self-defence training across multiple disciplines and age groups.
Our history matters because genuine experience is built over time.
More than 20 years of teaching, learning, competing, mentoring, developing students and contributing to the Townsville community has shaped the Academy we are today.
This gallery is a record of that journey and of the students, families, instructors and supporters who have been part of it.
And the story continues with every new student who steps onto the mats.
One Academy. Four Martial Arts. Unlimited Potential.
