Why the 2026 Will/Machado Gathering, respected BJJ lineage, continued instructor development and practical self-defence training matter for Townsville families.
What Really Makes a Quality Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy?
When choosing a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) academy, what really matters?
Is it the colour of an instructor's belt? The number of medals displayed on the wall? The reputation of the organisation behind the academy? Or something far more important?
At United Martial Arts & Fitness (UMF) in Townsville, we believe genuine quality goes deeper than titles, rankings and reputation.
It comes from strong foundations, knowledgeable instructors, continued professional development and a commitment to passing on skills that genuinely benefit students.
As a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt and multi-discipline martial arts instructor, I believe earning a black belt carries a responsibility to continue learning, developing and improving.
That commitment was reinforced when I attended the 2026 Will/Machado Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gathering in Melbourne on 10 October 2026, joining practitioners, black belts and academy owners from across Australia.
The event provided an opportunity to train alongside highly experienced martial artists and learn from one of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu's most respected figures, Grandmaster Rigan Machado.
More importantly, it reinforced why the culture of an academy, the attitude of its instructors and the willingness to share knowledge are just as important as technical ability.
John Will and Rigan Machado: A Legacy That Helped Shape Australian BJJ
To understand the significance of the Will/Machado connection, it helps to appreciate the history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Australia.
Long before BJJ became widely recognised through mixed martial arts, international competitions and dedicated grappling academies, a small group of martial artists were helping establish the discipline throughout the country.
Among the most influential was John Will, Australia's first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt.
Through extensive international training, including his development under the Machado brothers, John Will helped introduce and establish Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instruction in Australia.
His contribution went beyond personal achievement. Through teaching, mentoring and developing an extensive martial arts network, he helped create opportunities for generations of Australian practitioners and instructors.
Grandmaster Rigan Machado, a member of the renowned Machado family, has also played an important role in the international development of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Known for his technical knowledge, teaching ability and decades of experience, his influence extends across generations of practitioners.
The Will/Machado lineage represents an established tradition of technical development, martial arts education and the sharing of knowledge.
At UMF, we value that history.
As an official Will/Machado Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Associate School, we recognise the responsibility that comes with maintaining a connection to respected martial arts foundations.
However, a respected lineage is only the beginning.
What matters is how that knowledge is understood, developed and passed on to students.
The 2026 Will/Machado Gathering: A Powerful Reminder of What Martial Arts Should Be
One of my greatest takeaways from the Will/Machado Gathering in Melbourne was not simply the extraordinary level of technical expertise on display.
It was the culture of respect, camaraderie and shared learning that existed throughout the event.
Having the opportunity to train alongside approximately 80 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belts, together with practitioners of various ranks and experience levels, was an exceptional experience.
What impressed me most was the atmosphere on the mats.
Despite the tremendous depth of knowledge and experience in the room, there was no sense of superiority or ego.
Everyone was welcoming, approachable and genuinely willing to share their knowledge, exchange ideas and help one another improve.
It demonstrated something I have always believed about martial arts.
The greatest practitioners are not necessarily those who know the most, but those who remain willing to learn and help others develop.
Learning From Grandmaster Rigan Machado
Training under Grandmaster Rigan Machado was a particular highlight.
His technical knowledge was evident not only in his demonstrations but also in his exceptional ability to explain complex techniques with clarity, precision and attention to detail.
What made an equally strong impression was his humility and approachability.
Despite his standing within the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community, he made himself available to answer questions, provide guidance and personally assist practitioners.
His ability to break down techniques into understandable principles reinforced the importance of being an effective teacher rather than simply a skilled practitioner.
For me, this demonstrated an important principle:
True martial arts mastery is not measured simply by what you know, but by your willingness to share that knowledge and help others grow.
A Black Belt Is Not the End of Learning
The Gathering reinforced something I strongly believe as an instructor at United Martial Arts & Fitness.
Earning a black belt does not mean you have finished learning.
It represents another stage in your development and a greater responsibility to continue improving.
I returned from Melbourne with an even stronger appreciation for the importance of remaining a student, maintaining an open mind and surrounding yourself with people who challenge and inspire you to become better.
That is the culture we strive to develop at UMF.
An environment where experience is respected, knowledge is shared, egos are left behind and every student, regardless of rank, is encouraged to keep learning and improving.
Why Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Lineage Matters
In martial arts, lineage refers to the history through which knowledge, principles and techniques are passed from instructor to student.
A recognised lineage provides an understanding of where an instructor's knowledge comes from and the foundations upon which their training has developed.
However, lineage alone does not guarantee excellent instruction.
A quality instructor must understand not only how a technique works, but why it works, when it is appropriate and how to teach it effectively.
At UMF, we believe instructors should be able to:
-
Explain the principles behind techniques rather than simply demonstrate movements.
-
Identify and correct technical mistakes.
-
Adapt teaching methods for different ages, abilities and experience levels.
-
Help students develop genuine understanding instead of memorising movements.
-
Continue refining their own knowledge through training, mentoring and experience.
Our responsibility is not simply to teach students a collection of techniques.
It is to help them develop the understanding, confidence and ability to apply what they learn.
A strong lineage provides the foundation. Quality instruction brings that knowledge to life.
Why Continued Instructor Development Benefits Every UMF Student
Martial arts are constantly evolving.
Training methods improve, competition strategies change and instructors discover more effective ways to communicate complex information.
An academy committed to high standards must remain open to learning.
For students, continued instructor development can contribute to clearer explanations, stronger technical foundations, improved training methods and exposure to different perspectives.
For parents, it also demonstrates an important principle.
We cannot expect children to embrace learning, accept correction and pursue improvement if their instructors are unwilling to demonstrate those same qualities.
At UMF, continued instructor development is part of our responsibility to students.
My experience at the Will/Machado Gathering reinforced how valuable it is to learn from practitioners with different experiences, backgrounds and perspectives.
The knowledge gained through these opportunities helps us reflect on our teaching and identify ways to strengthen the training we provide.
At UMF, the standards we encourage in our students are the standards we expect our instructors to uphold.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for Sport AND Practical Self-Defence
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is internationally recognised for grappling, positional control, submissions and ground-based techniques.
Sport BJJ develops technical ability, problem-solving, resilience and the capacity to perform under pressure.
However, practical self-defence can present challenges that differ significantly from organised competition.
In a sporting environment, participants operate under established rules, weight divisions, referee supervision and controlled conditions.
Real-world confrontations may involve unpredictable circumstances, unsuitable surfaces, additional people and situations where disengagement is the safest option.
Understanding those differences is important.
At UMF, our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training places emphasis on both technical grappling development and practical self-defence principles.
Students learn about positioning, leverage, balance, control, escapes and opportunities to disengage.
Our BJJ program also incorporates Judo- and wrestling-based takedowns, helping students develop a more complete understanding of grappling from standing positions through to the ground.
We encourage students to understand both the strengths and limitations of techniques.
Train for technical excellence. Develop practical understanding. Never confuse competition rules with the realities of self-defence.
No martial art can guarantee personal safety. However, structured and realistic training can help students develop useful skills, confidence, awareness and better decision-making.
Why Gi and No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Both Matter
At UMF, students have opportunities to develop their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills through both Gi and No-Gi training.
Each format contributes to technical understanding in different ways.
Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Gi training involves wearing the traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu uniform, allowing students to use grips on the jacket, sleeves and trousers.
This develops an understanding of grip control, leverage, positional awareness, technique and strategic movement.
No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
No-Gi training removes reliance on traditional uniform grips.
Students develop control using body positioning, movement, underhooks, overhooks and other grappling principles.
This encourages adaptability and an understanding of controlling an opponent without depending on uniform grips.
Developing More Complete Grappling Skills
Both formats provide valuable opportunities for technical development.
When combined with appropriate standing grappling, takedown training and practical self-defence instruction, they help students develop a broader understanding of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
The aim is not simply to perform techniques under ideal conditions.
It is to understand the principles behind them and learn to adapt appropriately.
What This Means for Townsville Parents
For parents considering Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for their children, the benefits should extend beyond learning how to grapple.
At UMF, we believe martial arts training should contribute to the development of capable, disciplined, respectful and confident young people.
Our children's programs place emphasis on qualities that have value both inside and outside the academy.
Discipline: Learning to follow instructions, remain focused, practise consistently and work towards long-term goals.
Respect: Treating instructors, training partners, parents and others appropriately.
Resilience: Learning to manage frustration, respond to setbacks and continue working when something becomes difficult.
Confidence: Developing genuine self-belief through preparation, improved skills and personal achievement.
Responsibility: Understanding that behaviour, decisions and commitment influence personal progress and the training environment.
These qualities develop through consistent expectations, positive instruction and a shared commitment between parents, students and instructors.
More Than Martial Arts: Character Development at UMF
UMF also incorporates a structured Character Development System into its children's programs.
Our approach recognises that technical ability and personal development should complement one another.
We want children to understand that earning respect, demonstrating discipline and accepting responsibility are important parts of their martial arts journey.
For families, the culture of an academy matters.
The atmosphere I experienced at the Will/Machado Gathering reinforced how important that culture can be.
Experienced practitioners supported less experienced students. Knowledge was shared openly, and everyone was encouraged to improve.
Those are the same principles we aim to reinforce at UMF.
Our goal is not simply to develop better martial artists. It is to help develop better-equipped young people.

What This Means for Adults Training BJJ in Townsville
For adults, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers a challenging and rewarding pathway to improving fitness, learning grappling skills and developing confidence.
Whether your goal is practical self-defence, physical conditioning, technical development or competition, the quality of your instruction matters.
At UMF, adult students are encouraged to progress through structured training that focuses on understanding techniques rather than simply memorising movements.
Our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program includes positional control, escapes, sweeps, submissions, Judo-based takedowns and live grappling.
Training is introduced progressively, allowing beginners to develop important foundations while more experienced students continue refining their abilities.
You do not need previous martial arts experience to begin.
You need a willingness to learn, train consistently and challenge yourself.
One of the lessons reinforced at the Will/Machado Gathering is that every practitioner, regardless of rank, has something to learn.
That principle applies equally to someone stepping onto the mats for the first time and someone who has trained for decades.
Progress does not come from knowing everything. It comes from being willing to keep learning.

The UMF Difference: Standards That Extend Beyond the Mat
At United Martial Arts & Fitness, we believe an academy's reputation should be built on more than advertising, impressive titles or the number of students enrolled.
It should be reflected in the quality of instruction, the development of students and the standards maintained throughout the organisation.
UMF's connection to the Will/Machado Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu lineage forms an important part of our grappling program.
Our wider martial arts curriculum also provides opportunities to train in Wing Chun Kung Fu, Boxing, Muay Thai, Krav Maga and other practical self-defence disciplines.
Each martial art contributes different techniques, principles and perspectives.
Our responsibility is to teach them appropriately, maintain strong technical foundations and help students understand the purpose behind their training.
The 2026 Will/Machado Gathering reinforced something that extends beyond any single martial art.
Great instructors never stop being students, and great academies never stop looking for ways to improve.
The connections we maintain, the experiences we gain and the knowledge we continue developing should ultimately benefit the people who place their trust in us.
Our students.
That is the responsibility we take seriously at UMF.
