FAQ's
What should I wear to my first class?
For your first class, wear comfortable training clothes such as a t-shirt and shorts or leggings. Training is done barefoot to improve balance, coordination, and proper technique development, which is especially important for beginners learning new movements.
Bring a water bottle and arrive 5–10 minutes early so we can welcome you and help your child settle in. Parents are encouraged to watch the first class to provide reassurance. There’s no expectation to perform—this session is about building comfort, understanding the environment, and allowing your child to ease into something new at their own pace.
How does the timetable work?
Our Class Schedule is structured by age group, experience level, and program focus so that every student trains with others at a similar stage. This helps children feel comfortable, reduces pressure, and allows them to progress at a steady, appropriate pace.
We offer multiple class times across the week to support busy family routines. Once you get started, we’ll guide you on which classes suit your child best and help you build a consistent routine. As your child grows in confidence and ability, their schedule can be adjusted to match their progress.
When is the best time to get started?
The best time to start is now. Many families wait for the “right time,” but in reality, starting sooner allows your child to begin developing confidence, discipline, and focus straight away.
We operate on a 46-week curriculum, so you’re not tied to school terms. Your child won’t be behind—they’ll simply begin at the starting point and build from there. Early exposure to structure and routine helps children settle in faster and creates positive habits that carry over into school and home life.
How do I know if my child is ready to get started?
If your child can follow basic instructions, participate in a group setting, and is open to trying something new, they are ready. Many children don’t arrive confident or focused—that’s exactly what training develops over time.
Our instructors are experienced in working with all personalities, including shy, energetic, or easily distracted children. The program is designed to meet them where they are and gradually build listening skills, confidence, and resilience in a structured and supportive environment.
How many classes per week should I or my child attend?
We recommend attending 2 classes per week as the ideal starting point. This provides enough repetition for skills to develop while still being manageable for families with other commitments.
Consistent attendance helps children retain what they learn, build confidence, and develop discipline through routine. Attending only once per week can slow progress, while more frequent training can accelerate development. We can always adjust the schedule as your child becomes more comfortable and engaged.
Am I too old or unfit or uncoordinated to get started?
Not at all. Many people feel this way before starting, but martial arts is designed to build fitness, coordination, and confidence—not require it from the beginning.
You will be guided step-by-step at a pace that suits you, with no pressure to keep up with others. Over time, you’ll notice improvements in strength, mobility, and overall confidence. The hardest part is starting—once you do, progress comes naturally through consistent, structured training.
Can I make up missed classes or change classes?
Yes, we understand that family life can be unpredictable. School events, work commitments, and illness can all affect attendance, so we offer flexibility where possible to help you stay consistent.
If a class is missed, you may be able to attend another suitable session. Our goal is to support your child’s progress, not disrupt it. By working together and communicating with our team, we can help maintain routine and ensure your child continues developing without unnecessary setbacks.
How much does it cost?
Pricing varies depending on the program and how often you choose to attend. Rather than overwhelming you with options, we guide you based on your goals and your child’s needs after a trial class.
This ensures you’re choosing the right fit, not just the cheapest option. Martial arts is an investment in confidence, discipline, and long-term development—not just an activity.

How often should I attend?
For most students, 2 classes per week is ideal. This allows skills to be reinforced regularly while improving fitness and confidence over time.
Consistency is more important than intensity. Attending regularly builds routine and helps students feel more comfortable in each session. Over time, this leads to better retention, stronger technique, and greater enjoyment. We’ll help you find a balance that fits your schedule while still supporting steady progress.
Am I locked into a contract?
We offer structured memberships because meaningful progress requires consistency and commitment. Martial arts is not a short-term activity—it’s a long-term investment in personal development.
All terms are explained clearly before you begin, so you know exactly what to expect. Our goal is to work with families who value growth and are committed to helping their child benefit fully from the program, rather than approaching it as something temporary.
How does the sash/belt system work and how do I progress through the sash/belts?
Students begin at the beginner level and progress through the sash/belt system based on demonstrated ability, not just time spent attending classes. This ensures every student earns their progress and develops genuine confidence in their skills.
Progression is based on technique, consistency, attitude, and effort. Gradings are used to assess readiness and celebrate growth. This teaches children patience, responsibility, and the value of working toward goals—important lessons that extend far beyond training.
What style of martial arts do I do?
We offer a complete and well-rounded system that combines multiple disciplines to give students practical, adaptable skills for both self-defence and personal development. This ensures your child is not limited to one style but develops confidence across a variety of situations.
At UMF, students are exposed to:
- Wing Chun Kung Fu – structure, efficiency, and close-range control
- Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) – ground control, positioning, and submissions
- Muay Thai – striking, conditioning, and resilience
- Boxing/Kickboxing – footwork, timing, combination striking, fitness, and hand speed
- Street Edge Krav Maga – practical, real-world self-defence
This integrated approach keeps training engaging while building well-rounded skills. Over time, students develop confidence not only in physical techniques but also in awareness, control, and the ability to handle real-life situations calmly and effectively.
Will my child or I get hurt?
Safety is always a priority. All classes are structured, supervised, and designed to match the student’s age, experience, and ability level. We focus on control, awareness, and correct technique before introducing higher intensity training.
While minor bumps can occasionally happen—as with any physical activity—serious injuries are rare. Our environment is controlled and supportive, with instructors closely monitoring each class. The goal is to build confidence and skill safely, not expose students to unnecessary risk.
